Adeline’s character was the character that intrigued me the
most. When she was forced upon LaMotte we were introduced to a scared and
helpless individual. When she was first introduced, it was unclear what type of
character she would be, but it was made apparent that she would be a major
character. The fact that she was placed under LaMotte’s care, caused a bit of
confusion. What kind of role would she play, since LaMotte is already married?
She seemed like she would be a fragile and troublesome character, although she
did cause a few problems, she was the opposite of weak. She stood up for
herself and did not give into anything she did not want to. Adeline takes everything
learned from LaMotte and applies it to her everyday life, and because of that
we see a evolution in character.
I agree, as many seem to, that Adeline was an intriguing character. However I find her interesting based on the way she; historically speaking, challenges the agency of women. Adeline's character strength, and the way she plays on people's assumptions that she is weak or fragile is a way of undermining her gender role. She should be perceived as weak, and have little agency, but in truth she is a master of manipulating things to go her way even under those constraints. I think the things she learned from LaMotte, especially manipulation only exacerbates her personality.
ReplyDeleteAdeline was an incredibly complex character throughout the story. Throughout the first half of the book, Adeline faints and is hysterical, though there is an initial mystery about her character from the original circumstances under which she is introduced. However, as the story continues, Adeline tends to manipulate the situations around her, which shows that she is not as weak as she appears on the surface. As the story becomes more focused from her point of view, her character gains more depth.
